Cars
Two of a kind
Ferrari has unveiled two new limited-edition special series cars.
The 812 Competizione and the 812 Competizione A – a spectacular Targa-top version – offer uncompromising maximum performance.
To achieve such heights the naturally-aspirated 830cv engine has been significantly re-engineered and includes titanium con-rods, a lighter crankshaft, and a new cam system derived from Ferrari’s F1 experience.
The single air duct of the 812 Competizione is flanked by two carbon-fibre intakes for the brakes. Cooling performance of the engine's fluids is improved by 10%, while the operating temperatures of the brakes have been reduced by around 30°C
While power has gone up, weight has come down, by a total of 38kg. Carbon-fibre was used extensively on the exterior – especially on the front bumpers, rear bumpers, rear spoiler and air intakes – as well as within the interior.
Detail changes including the use of lightweight technical fabrics and a reduction in sound-proofing. Further reducing mass are lightweight forged aluminium wheels and titanium studs, a lithium-ion battery, while even the engine oil tank is 1kg lighter.
At the front of both cars, the evacuation of the hot air is enhanced by the vents on the bonnet either side of the central carbon-fibre ‘blade’.
The brake cooling concept was completely redesigned around the new front 'Aero' calliper which debuted on the SF90 Stradale and which has an air intake integrated into its casting.
The rear of the 812 Competizione demonstrates its aerodynamic prowess, with vortex generators, a full-width spoiler and diffuser, together with relocated exhausts that use learnings from F1 to generate additional downforce
The relocation of the exhaust opens up the possibility of introducing a solution typical of F1 cars from the 2010s: dynamic interaction between the exhaust gases and the diffuser’s field. In this configuration, the hot flow of gas from the exhaust pipes energises the ‘cold’ flow from the diffuser thereby guaranteeing additional downforce.
The rear screen of the 812 Competizione is unique, and features three pairs of vortex generators. Part of the air flow is deflected towards the sides of the spoiler which boosts downforce generation.
The independent rear-wheel steering features a new electronic management system that enables the right and left actuators to be actioned individually rather than synchronised. This evolution delivers exceptional agility and precision in cornering.
The transverse groove across the bonnet – in which the carbon-fibre blade sits – proved an innovative way of disguising air vents for the engine bay, while also increasing their surface area
As such, the two cars follow in the tradition of their V12 special series predecessors, the exclusive F12tdf and 599 GTO – but have raised performance to new heights.
