Formula 3 on track immediately at the Hungaroring

Heavy rain meant the Spa-Francorchamps Feature Race was cancelled last Sunday, so the F3 teams go again in Hungary this weekend, with Camara capable of clinching the championship title

Last Sunday’s Feature Race in Belgium consisted of just two laps behind the Safety Car before it had to be cancelled because of the terrible track conditions, therefore the action all came down to Saturday’s Sprint in which Rafael Camara finished fifth and Tuukka Taponen 18th.

Sprint Race. The only race of the event was run as usual with the top six rows of the grid inverted and Rafael put in a strong showing to go from 11th to fifth. He had a very strong pace right to the end. “I think I drove a good race,” he commented. “The points I picked up are very important for the championship and, as for my pace, I’d say the work the team did paid off.”

A tough time. Taponen however had little to smile about, as his weekend was compromised when he qualified down in 25th place. “I am very disappointed because I couldn’t get the car into the top ten which was easily within our grasp,” he said. “We missed the critical moment on the last set of tyres, when the track was at its best and the cars had less fuel on board. I still believe we have the potential to do well, but we have to work out how to manage qualifying.” Taponen made up seven places in the race to finish 18th.

Penultimate round. The teams are now in Hungary for the ninth of this season’s ten rounds. Camara still heads the points table on 126, 28 ahead of second placed Nikola Tsolov. Rafael could actually clinch the title this weekend if he finishes 40 points ahead of the second placed driver.

Programme. The action at the Hungaroring starts on Friday at 09.55 CET with 45 minutes of free practice, followed at 15.00 by qualifying. The Sprint Race is on Saturday at 10.05 while the Feature Race gets underway on Sunday at 08.30.
