Ferrari Challenge Wraps Up Trip to Watkins Glen with Sunday Races
In a tale of two stories, Ferrari Challenge North America drivers qualified in the wet on Sunday morning at Watkins Glen International, but raced in the dry later in the afternoon.
Following the event, which saw championship gaps narrow further, drivers only have one event remaining in North America prior to the Finali Mondiali in October.
Trofeo Pirelli. Ferrari of Seattle reigned supreme on Sunday at Watkins Glen International, winning both races in the Trofeo Pirelli and Trofeo Pirelli Am classes.
In Trofeo Pirelli, the team locked out the top three, as Massimo Perrina finished first on back-to-back days and his uncle Roberto Perrina in placed second. Brian Cook followed in third for his second consecutive podium.
It was a race between the trio from the drop of the green flag, and the younger Perrina further extends his championship lead over his Trofeo Pirelli competitors.
With an impressive performance in Trofeo Pirelli Am, Michael Porter scored his first win of the season for Ferrari of Seattle as well. In his first event since Daytona International Speedway in April, Porter started from the pole position, but fended off Michael Mathes (Ferrari of Central New Jersey) for the win.
Mathes – coming off a victory on Saturday – finished just fourth tenths behind Porter for second place, while Rey Acosta (The Collection) finished third by less than one second off the lead.
Coppa Shell. With back-to-back victories at Watkins Glen, Mitchell Green (Ferrari Westlake) captured his second weekend sweep of the season and edged ever closer to championship rival Yahn Bernier (Ferrari of Seattle).
Green qualified second, but started first after the polesitter encountered issues prior to the start. As a result, Green sailed off at the beginning and finished two-and-a-half seconds ahead of Bernier in second – almost a mirror image to Saturday’s results. Gary Ott (Ferrari Philadelphia) finished third as he did in Race 1.
In Coppa Shella Am, Jeffrey Nunberg (Ferrari of Central New Jersey) gave the local crowd a reason to cheer for by winning Race 2 on Sunday. With the New Jersey dealership located four hours from Watkins Glen, Nunberg rallied from fourth to first for his second win since the opening round at Sonoma Raceway in March.
Nunberg’s pass for the lead happened on championship leader Gabe Hrib (Ferrari of Atlanta) as the latter passed slower traffic and Nunberg followed suit. Nunberg also dodged a spinning car just a few minutes later en route to his victory. While Hrib finished second, Watkins Glen Race 1 winner Louis Flory (Ferrari of Houston) finished third.
North America Finale Next. One event remains for Ferrari Challenge North America before the Finali Mondiali. WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca will host that round, which is scheduled for September 10 – 14 after the Lone Star Le Mans at Circuit of The Americas featuring the FIA World Endurance Championship.
All races, including replays from this weekend in Watkins Glen, are available on the Ferrari YouTube channel.
