Weekend preview: 296 Challenge at Estoril for the GT Winter Series
Just one week after the season-opener staged at the Portuguese circuit of Portimão, where Ferrari secured two overall wins and a second place with the 296 GT3 of Olimp Racing, the GT Winter Series returns to the track, this time at Estoril. The Prancing Horse drivers will be in action in the Cup 1 class, dedicated to single-marque series cars, where five 296 Challenge cars will be vying for success.
GT Winter Series. The Algarve debut round had the 296 GT3 number 777 of Olimp Racing entrusted to Krystian Korzeniowski and Karol Basz as the outright protagonist. In addition to the success in the 55-minute endurance race contested by the pairing, Korzeniowski won the first 30-minute race, while Basz finished in the runner-up place in the second. The 296 GT3 number 96 of AF Corse also delivered strong performances, with Yaroslav Veselaho taking fourth, sixth and seventh.
For the upcoming weekend, no cars from Maranello have been announced for the GT3 class grid.
Cup 1. Five 296 Challenge will instead be fielded in the class dedicated to single-marque series cars. The presence of the number 13 of Kessel Racing is confirmed, after it claimed a first and a third place at Portimão with Lukas Azzato in the Sprint events and third with the same Azzato paired with Alberto Cola in the longer race. The triumph in the latter race went to the number 85 AF Corse car, entrusted to Sean Ran and Josh Steed, who return to the grid also boosted by two other podiums with Ran.
The sister car from AF Corse, number 204, will see Joseph Dean and Aston Millar at the wheel, while in the number 150 from Araujo Competição we will find Alvaro Ramos, and in the number 155 from Liqui Moly Team Engstler will be Friedrick Müller, fresh from two fourth places in the Algarve.
