Weekend preview: Ferrari racing in France, Italy and the USA
The two AF Corse USA Ferrari 296 GT3s competing in the GT World Challenge America are back racing at VIR. Seven cars from the Maranello-based manufacturer will compete in the third round of the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup in Imola. In the south of France, at Paul Ricard, six Ferraris are ready to take on the challenge in the International GT Open.
GT World Challenge America. After missing the Sebring round due to scheduling conflicts, AF Corse USA returns to the series for the fourth round of the season, which will be contested at the VIRginia International Raceway track. There are two Ferrari 296 GT3s entered in this event: Marcelo and Christian Hann will be driving car number 16 in the Pro Am class, while the Am class will see the leading pair in the standings, Jay Schrebman and Oswaldo Negri, in car number 163. Friday is dedicated to free practice, while on Saturday, after qualifying, the first race starts at 3.15 p.m. and ends at 5.15 p.m, Race-2 on Sunday from 2.45 to 6.45 p.m.
GT World Challenge Europe. The series arrives in Italy, on the Misano track, where the Ferraris intend to make a mark in their home event. Seven 296 GT3s will compete in various classes in a record-breaking grid featuring 44 cars.
There are three Ferraris in the Pro class, two of which fielded by AF Corse – Francorchamps Motors: number 50 with the two official drivers Arthur Leclerc and Thomas Neubauer, and number 51 with Alessio Rovera and Vincent Abril, winners of the season-opening race at Brands Hatch. The third Ferrari is driven by Emil Frey Racing, number 14 with Konsta Lappalainen and Ben Green.
In the Silver class will be the number 52 Ferrari 296 GT3, the third AF Corse – Francorchamps Motors car, with Jef Machiels and Marcos Siebert, who are fifth in the standings after their success in Race-1 at Brands Hatch. At the top of the Gold class are Thierry Vermeulen and Chris Lulham, who will tackle this event at the wheel of a Ferrari 296 GT3, the number 69 car of Emil Frey Racing.
Dennis Marschall and Dustin Blattner are also leading in the standings in the Bronze class with the number 74 Ferrari 296 GT3 from Kessel Racing. The two drivers were part of the crew that won the 24 Hours of Spa in June and are also leaders in the Endurance Cup.
Also in the same class is number 93 from Ziggo Sport Tempesta, with Eddie Cheever and Marco Pulcini.
Misano returns to the format of two races on two separate days, with Race-1 scheduled for Saturday at 8.15 p.m. and Race-2 getting underway on Sunday at 2.45 p.m.
International GT Open. After less than two weeks, the championship returns, moving from Budapest to Paul Ricard in France. Six Ferrari 296 GT3s will take part in the fifth round of the season. Among the Pros, Elite Motorsport with Entire Race Engineering number 17 is confirmed, with Tom Lebbon and Tom Emson who, thanks to their victory in Race-1 in Hungary, moved up to third place in the standings with 65 points, 22 behind the leader. Fifth place, with 47 points, for the AF Corse Ferrari 296 GT3 driven by Carl Bennett and Tommaso Mosca. Among the Pro Am drivers will be AF Corse’s number 55 with Laurent De Meeus and a driver yet to be announced replacing Vincent Abril, engaged in Misano in the GT World Challenge Europe - Sprint Cup. Making its debut in the same class is the number 88 Ferrari 296 GT3 of Info Africa Racing by Dragon Racing with Axcil Jefferies and Xollie Letlaka, which has already performed well in the 24H Series. In the Am class, drivers Gino Forgione and Michele Rugolo will defend their lead – which they share with Sansom – at the wheel of AF Corse’s Ferrari 296 GT3 number 21. In third place is Olimp Racing’s number 5 car with Polish drivers Stanislaw Jedliński and Krystian Korzeniowski.
After Friday’s free practice sessions, qualifying is scheduled for Saturday from 10.15 to 10.35 a.m. and from 11.35 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. Race-1, lasting 70 minutes, will start at 5.45 p.m., while Race-2 is scheduled for Sunday from 1.30 to 2.30 p.m.
