Weekend preview: Ferrari on track in Canada, Japan and Europe
The IMSA championship returns to the spotlight in Canada with four 296 GT3s and official driver Daniel Serra on track. Fuji hosts three major events: the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli Japan, the GT World Challenge Asia, and the Japan Cup. In Italy, Mugello will set a new entry record with 59 crews taking part, including many Ferraris. Round five of the British GT takes place at Snetterton in the UK.
IMSA. Four teams, competing across two GT3 classes, will field a total of four Ferraris in the Grand Prix round of the IMSA SportsCar Championship at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. DragonSpeed continues its full-season campaign in the GTD Pro class, while Conquest Racing, Inception Racing, and Triarsi Competizione each enter a 296 GT3 in the GTD Pro-Am category. In the previous round, the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen in early June, Ferrari secured podium finishes in both classes. The seventh round of the championship features a two-hour 40-minute race at the former Formula 1 venue traditionally known as Mosport. Located 90 minutes east of Toronto, the circuit hosted the Canadian F1 Grand Prix six times, most recently in 1977. Giacomo Altoè returns to GTD Pro, joining Albert Costa in the number 81 DragonSpeed 296 GT3. Costa finished third at The Glen, where he partnered with official driver Davide Rigon. Altoè took pole position in his most recent IMSA race at Laguna Seca in May, where he finished second. Costa, who also claimed pole at Sebring International Raceway in March, currently sits third in the GTD Pro standings.
Inception Racing fields the number 70 Ferrari for Brendan Iribe and Frederik Schandorff. The team arrives off the back of a second-place finish at Watkins Glen, where Ollie Millroy joined the pair. Official driver Daniel Serra will share the number 34 Conquest Racing 296 GT3 with Manny Franco. The pair are currently ninth in the GTD standings. Last year at this circuit, Franco, paired with Costa, finished 11th. The driver line-up for the number 021 Ferrari of Triarsi Competizione has yet to be confirmed. The team recently finished 12th at Watkins Glen with Alessandro Balzan, A.J. Muss, and Jason Hart.
The event at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park starts with a 90-minute free practice session on Friday, 11 July, at 1:55 p.m. A second 90-minute free practice session will take place on Saturday at 10:35 a.m., followed by GTD qualifying at 4:00 p.m. and GTD Pro qualifying at 4:25 p.m. The race is scheduled to begin at 2:05 p.m. on Sunday 13 July.
