Weekend preview: Ferrari in action in Japan
The penultimate round of the GT World Challenge Asia takes place at the Okayama circuit, with Ferrari official driver Yifei Ye among the entrants, at the wheel of a Ferrari 296 GT3. At least two of the Maranello manufacturer’s cars can still aim for the title across the various categories. In the Japan Cup, also held on the same track, several teams will compete for overall victory in the different classes.
GT World Challenge Asia. The penultimate round of the season takes place at Okayama. Participants include Yifei Ye, winner of the recent 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans in the Giallo Modena-liveried Ferrari 499P entered by the privateer AF Corse team. On this occasion, he will be at the wheel of the number 55 296 GT3 of Winhere Harmony Racing, alongside Jiajun Song. The two Chinese drivers will compete in the Pro Am class. The team will also field a second car in the Silver class, the number 96 with Luo Kailuo and Deng Yi, the latter currently second in the standings with 128 points, 17 points behind the leaders on 145.
The pairing of David Tjiptobiantoro (the reigning champion) and Christian Colombo is also competing for the title in the Am class. They currently top the standings with 162 points, 26 ahead of their closest rivals. The crew race in the number 75 296 GT3 of Garage 75. In the same class, Nakanishi Kei and Wakisaka Shigekazu pilot the number 60 of LM Corsa.
After pre-qualifying on Friday, 29 August, qualifying will take place on Saturday, 30 August, from 9:00 to 9:37 a.m. This will determine the starting grid for Race-1, which kicks off at 1 p.m. and lasts one hour. On Sunday, 31 August, the second race will start at 10 a.m.
Japan Cup. In the third round of the series, held at Okayama, Akihiro Tsuzuki and Shintaro Kawabata will attempt to defend their lead at the top of both the overall GT3 and Pro Am standings. They lead with 73 points, driving car number 296, a Ferrari 296 GT3 entered by Hitotsuyama with Cornes Racing. The crew will mainly have to contend with the number 9 Ferrari of Bingo Racing, driven by LM Corsa’s Shinji Takei and Ukyo Sasahara, who currently sit third in the standings with 53 points. Also competing in Pro Am are the number 45 of Ponos Racing with Yorikatsu Tsujiko and Kei Cozzolino, the number 18 of TEAM UPGARAGE with ACR with AKITA and Takashi Kobayashi, the number 98 of KTunes Racing with Daisuke Yamawaki and Shinichi Takagi, the number 181 of Norik Racing with Norikazu Shibata and Taku Bamba, and the number 555 of Maezawa Racing with Yusaku Maezawa and Naoki Yokomizo.
In the Am class, the number 1 Ferrari 296 GT3 from Team Macchina, driven by Tadao Uematsu and Hirokazu Suzuki, aims to earn more points to extend its lead. The crew currently holds a 45-point advantage over its closest rivals. The number 66 of Carguy Racing, featuring Takashi Toyoda and Kazuki Ota, will also compete in the Am class.
On Saturday, qualifying and Race-1 run from 4:00 to 5:05 p.m., while on Sunday, Race-2 will be held from 1:20 to 2:25 p.m.
