The car thus redefines the whole concept of fun behind the wheel, guaranteeing pure emotions not just when it is being pushed to its limits, but also in day-to-day driving situations.

The values of fuel consumptions and CO2 emissions shown were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable at the time of type approval.&nbsp;The fuel consumption and CO2 emission ﬁgures refer to the WLTP cycle. In order to be placed on the market, passenger cars carry out a series of tests to verify their compliance with regulations.&nbsp;

Wltp: test for CO₂ emissions and fuel consumption

The tests to assess fuel consumption, CO2 and pollutant emissions are carried out in the laboratory and are based on speciﬁc driving cycles. In this way, the tests are reproducible and the results comparable. This is important because only a laboratory test, which follows a standardized and repeatable procedure, allows consumers to compare different car models. On 1 September 2017, the new Worldwide harmonised Light-duty vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) came into force in Europe and will gradually replace the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) protocol. NEDC (New European Driving Cycle): it has been the European driving cycle used so far for the measurement of fuel consumption and emissions from passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The ﬁrst European driving cycle came into force in 1970 and referred to an urban route. In 1992 it was also considered to have an extra-urban phase and since 1997 it has been used for measuring consumption and CO2 emissions. However, the composition of this cycle is no longer consistent with current driving styles and distances travelled on different types of roads.&nbsp; The average speed of the NEDC is only 34 km/h, accelerations are low and the maximum speed is just 120 km/h. WLTP procedure: WLTP uses new Worldwide harmonised Light-duty vehicle Test Cycles (WLTC) to measure fuel consumption, CO2 and pollutant emissions from passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The new protocol aims to provide customers with more realistic data, better reﬂecting the daily use of the vehicle. The new WLTP procedure is characterized by a more dynamic driving proﬁle with more signiﬁcant acceleration. The maximum speed increases from 120 to 131.3 km/ h, the average speed is 46.5 km/h and the total cycle time is 30 minutes, 10 minutes more than the previous NEDC. The distance travelled doubles from 11 to 23.25 kilometers. The WLTP test consists of four parts depending on the maximum speed: Low (up to 56.5 km/h), Medium (up to 76.6 km/h), High (up to 97.4 km/h), Extra-high (up to 131.3 km/h). These parts of the cycle simulate urban and suburban driving and driving on extra-urban roads and motorways. The procedure also takes into account all vehicle’s optional contents that affect aerodynamics, rolling resistance and vehicle mass, resulting in a CO2 value that reﬂects the characteristics of the single vehicle.

The WLTP procedure will gradually replace the NEDC procedure. The WLTP applies to new passenger car models from 1 September 2017, to all passenger cars registered from 1 September 2018 and is mandatory for all EU Member States. Until the end of 2020, both fuel consumption and CO2 emission values in WLTP and NEDC will be present in the vehicle documents. Indeed, NEDC values will be used to assess the average CO2 emissions of cars registered in the EU throughout 2020. In addition, some countries may continue to use the NEDC data for ﬁscal purposes. From 2021 onwards, WLTP data will be the only consumption/ CO2 emissions values for all cars. Used vehicles will not be affected by this step and will maintain their certiﬁed NEDC values.ROAD CONSUMPTION AND EMISSIONS OF PASSENGER CARSThe new WLTP test procedure is more representative of current driving conditions than the NEDC procedure, but it cannot take into account all&nbsp;&nbsp;possible cases including the effect of the driving style that is speciﬁc to each individual driver.Therefore, there will still be a difference between emissions and consumption measured in the laboratory and those resulting from the use of the vehicle in the real world, and the extent of this difference will depend on factors such as driving behavior, the use of on-board systems (e. g. air conditioning), trafﬁc and weather conditions that are characteristic of each geographical area and each driver. For this reason, only a standardized laboratory test allows to obtain values with which it is possible to compare vehicles and different models in a fair way.WHAT CHANGES FOR CUSTOMERS&nbsp;The new WLTP procedure will provide a more realistic criterion for comparing the fuel consumption and CO2 emission values of different vehicle models as it has been designed to better reﬂect real driving behavior and take into account the speciﬁc technical characteristics of the individual model and version, including optional equipment.

This architecture is rooted in the Prancing Horse’s unrivalled racing experience: the first Ferrari to sport a mid-rear V6 was the 246 SP in 1961, which won the Targa Florio that year and again in 1962. Also, in 1961, Ferrari claimed its first Formula 1 Constructors’ title with the 156 F1 powered by a 120° V6. Ferrari first installed turbos in a hot-vee on the 126 CK and then on the 126 C2, which in 1982 became the first turbocharged single-seater to win the Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship. The 126 C3 took the title again in 1983. And, lastly, the V6 PHEV turbo architecture has been standard on all Formula 1 cars since 2014.

AN ENGINEERING GEM

The Ferrari 296 GTS’s internal combustion engine introduces an unprecedented 120° “vee” configuration with equally-spaced firing and positioning of the turbos inside the vee which produces a much more compact engine and optimally distributed masses. The architecture is also ideal in terms of combustion sequence and balancing, and offers the additional benefits of integration of the intake plenums and the engine supports on the intake sides of the cylinder heads, while the fluid-dynamics and efficiency of the intake and exhaust line ducts have also been optimised.

ELECTRIC POWER

This is the first Ferrari road spider with rear-wheel drive plug-in (PHEV) hybrid architecture, which sees the internal combustion engine integrated with a rear-mounted electric motor. The two power units communicate through the TMA actuator, which allows them to be used together or just in electric mode. The electric motor boosts the maximum power of the Ferrari 296 GTS to a category-topping 830 cv, while ensuring the car’s versatility in everyday driving and enhancing driving enjoyment, thanks to instantaneous throttle response.

THE “LITTLE V12”

Sound-wise, the V6 engine rewrites the rulebook by harmoniously combining the force of the turbos with the harmony of the high-frequency notes of a naturally-aspirated V12. The first in the F163 engine family, this V6 earned itself the nickname “piccolo V12” (little V12) during the development phase thanks to its top-end scream. This is the result of the 120° vee architecture which guarantees a symmetrical firing order, while the equal-length, tuned exhaust manifolds combined with the single exhaust line outside the hot-V amplify the pressure waves. This lends incredible purity to the orders of harmonics, further helped by a limiter that hits an impressive 8500 rpm.

WELCOME TO THE AGE OF THE V6

Design

The Ferrari 296 GTS’s impeccably clean, simple architecture seems the work of a single pencil stroke. There are neither artificial optical effects nor stark colour contrasts. Instead it has a unique identity all of its own that rewrites the entire rulebook by rediscovering the most authentic principles of Italian car design. Its clean forms and interlocking volumes enhance the uncompromisingly sporty character of the worthy heir to a philosophy that can be traced back to the very roots of Ferrari tradition. Its modernity references 1960s’ Ferraris, which made simplicity and functionality their signatures. The 250 LM from 1963, in particular, provided great inspiration through elements such as the design of the B pillar, the rear wings, and Kamm tail

ITALIAN STYLING AND TRADITION

The need to stow the RHT (Retractable Hard Top) inside the engine compartment inspired the Ferrari Styling Centre team headed by Flavio Manzoni to create a new tonneau cover design, the geometries of which have produced styling elements very different to the Ferrari spiders of the recent past. While on the 296 GTB the engine bay is completely horizontal and dominated by two flying buttresses, in a nod to the 250 Le Mans archetype, the 296 GTS’s tail is absolutely unique

A REAL COUPÉ AND A TRUE SPIDER

As is the case with the 296 GTB, the dominant feature of the new car’s architecture is the signature ‘aero bridge’. The overall effect is of an extremely compact cabin effortlessly integrated with the wings and flanks. The buttress theme is further enhanced by contrasting sculpted extensions that frame the engine cover screen and integrate the novel fuel filler and battery charge covers, avoiding an architectural disharmony

The changes made for the Ferrari 296 GTS&nbsp;further emphasise the clean, sophisticated lines of the 296 GTB. When the top is down, it is the peerlessly elegant epitome of the open-air hybrid concept. Its unprecedented architecture for a spider, in fact, opens a whole new chapter in the marque’s story. The designers’ goal of retaining the 296 GTB’s main characteristics required a period of meticulous analysis of the dimensions of its technical components. There was a clear focus on minimising the impact of any modifications on the exterior bodywork and also on introducing a clear, instantly recognisable theme that would encapsulate the complexity of the design whilst translating it into accomplished linear forms

COMPLEXITY MADE SIMPLE

Aerodynamics

The 296 GTS bursts into the mid-engined spider sports car range, with several radical and innovative solutions. The turbo has been installed above the vee of the crankcase in a hot-V configuration. This allows more efficient heat management both of the engine bay itself and of the electrical components. This sharp break from the past is further highlighted by aero choices, which have turned Ferrari’s active aero paradigm of recent years on its head. On the 296 GTS, an active device is being used not to manage drag but to generate extra downforce

INNOVATION TO POWER

The use of the front bumper to generate downforce increased the cooling capacity of the underbody without having to adopt any active front aero mechanisms. The signature aerodynamic element at the front of the 296 GTS is the ‘tea-tray’. The arrangement of the radiating masses at the sides of the car frees up a central volume into which the tea tray is set. This aero device, inspired by Ferrari’s GT racing experience, creates a high overpressure field, which counteracts the depression field that characterises the underbody

The main aerodynamic feature of the rear of the 296 GTS is the active spoiler. However, the concept behind it is actually the exact opposite of the one adopted on previous models. In the past, flaps on the diffuser allowed a transition from a high-downforce (HD) configuration to a low-drag (LD) one that allowed maximum speed to be reached on the straight. However, on the 296 GTS, when the active aero device is deployed it increases downforce. The spoiler is integrated into the tail design and when maximum downforce is not required, it is stowed in a compartment in the upper section. But as soon as acceleration figures exceed a specific threshold, it deploys. This results is a 100 kg increase in downforce over the rear axle, improving the driver’s control in high-performance driving situations and minimising stopping distances under braking

ACTIVE SPOILER

The 296 GTS’s impressive performance was achieved by optimising the car’s volumes. The result is a car in which all the performance-oriented elements meld effortlessly with the styling, underscoring Ferrari’s inextricable marriage of technology and aesthetics. The aero development done on the 296 GTS means that in LD (low drag) configuration, it delivers 10% more downforce than previous applications. In HD (high downforce) configuration, there is an additional 100 kg in downforce thanks to the active spoiler. The result? Unprecedented handling, braking performance and driving pleasure

PARADIGM SHIFT

The specific conformation of the 296 GTS’s tonneau cover creates a virtual fairing that mimics the aerodynamic behaviour of a coupé. This means that the air above the aero profile is correctly deflected so that the car’s aerodynamics and cooling are as efficient as possible. Thanks to this optimisation work, the 296 GTS’s active spoiler delivers the same downforce as the 296 GTB

RADICAL INNOVATION

VEHICLE DYNAMICS

The 296 GTS’s dynamic development focussed around boosting the car’s pure performance, delivering class-leading levels of driver engagement as well as improving the usability and accessibility not just of the car’s speed, but also the hybrid layout. Specific components have been developed, not least the Transition Manager Actuator (TMA) and the 6-way Chassis Dynamic Sensor (6w-CDS). There are also new functions, such as the ABS EVO controller, which uses the data gathered by the 6w-CDS, and the grip estimation integrated with the EPS, seen on the 296 GTB

ADVANCED CONTROL FUNCTIONS

How easily accessible and usable the performance is also of significant importance in the 296 GTS: for instance, in electric-only eDrive mode, the car can reach speeds of up to 135 km/h without resorting to the ICE. In Hybrid mode, on the other hand, the ICE backs up the electric motor when higher performance is required. Stopping distances in the dry have been significantly shortened by the ABS EVO and its integration with the 6w-CDS sensor, which also ensures more consistent braking force under repeated heavy braking

EXPLOSIVE POWER, EXPERT CONTROL

The 296 GTB’s chassis was redesigned and optimised for the 296 GTS to improve torsional rigidity and beam stiffness compared to previous spider applications. This was achieved to the tune of 50% in the case of the former and 8% in the case of the latter. The main areas involved were the A-pillar, B-pillar and sills.

The 296 GTS’s cockpit was developed around the new entirely digital interface concept debuted on the SF90 Stradale. While with the latter the designers wanted to highlight the presence of the advanced technology and underscore a clear break with the past, in the case of the 296 GTS, the idea was to clothe that technology to sophisticated effect. The result is a pure, minimalistic connotation characterised by a powerful elegance that perfectly mirrors the design of the exterior

THE SOPHISTICATED FACE OF THE DIGITAL ERA

Most of the on-board instrumentation is clustered on the driver’s side. The cockpit is set into a deep cleft carved out of the dashboard trim from which emerge the steering wheel and the instrument cluster supported by two visible structural supports, which taper into the dashboard. Completing the picture are two side satellites, each with its own capacitive touch area. The passenger area is very minimalist indeed but a passenger-side display creates a participatory, almost co-driver-like experience

Assetto Fiorano

The spider’s extreme power and performance can be boosted to the utmost by the 296 GTS Assetto Fiorano package which includes significant weight reduction and aero features. These include special GT racing-derived adjustable Multimatic shock absorbers optimised for track use, high downforce carbon-fibre appendages on the front bumper, and more extensive use of lightweight materials such as carbon-fibre for both cabin and exterior.

TRACK SET-UP

The structure of some components, such as the inner door panel, had to be redesigned in some cases resulting in an overall weight saving of 8 kg. Lastly, a special 250 Le Mans-inspired livery can also be ordered exclusively with the Assetto Fiorano package.Its design runs from the front wings and hugs the central grille and delineates its edges. This styling element continues along the bonnet, creating a hammer motif before running lengthways up to the RHT, tonneau cover and then down onto the rear spoiler
