Camara’s thrilling farewell in Monza

Maranello 09 September 2025

The Brazilian, who had already won this year’s title, put on a stunning climb up the order in his final Formula 3 race. Taponen was out of luck this weekend.

Camara has enjoyed an excellent 2025 season. All four of his wins came in the Feature Race, always starting from pole position. After winning the title in Hungary with one round still remaining, Camara was looking forward to ending his incredible season in style. Mission accomplished, even if the weekend did not go to plan. “The weekend got off to a good start,” he said. “In free practice I got a very good feeling from the car and that was confirmed in qualifying.” In fact, Rafael was quickest in his qualifying group, but his time was disallowed because of a track limits infringement, which dropped him to last on the grid for both races. “It was just a small mistake but it ended up having a big effect on how the weekend unfolded,” he said.

A comeback. Starting from 30th on the grid in the Sprint Race, Camara showed what he cold, fighting his way through the field to just outside the points before a penalty following a collision dropped him to 25th. In the main event, the Feature Race, he was truly outstanding. On the opening lap he made up nine places to be 21st and the charge continued so that, on lap 14 he was tenth, claiming sixth place on lap 18, eventually taking the chequered flag in fifth place, just five seconds behind the winner. “Apart from the starting positions, I was very strong in both races,” reckoned Rafael. “I especially enjoyed the Feature Race and I did everything I could to bring home some points for the team, so there’s an element of regret that were unable to win the Teams title. It was a very special weekend, my last race in Formula 3 and my last with the Trident team, with whom I felt comfortable from day one. I’m very grateful to them and to the Scuderia Ferrari Driver Academy for giving me this opportunity to fight for the championship. It was a great season even if I didn’t finish on the podium in the final weekend. I think it was one of my best and a great way to end the championship.” Camara’s finished the season on 166 points, 42 more than the second placed driver.

Disappointed. Tuukka Taponen did not have the best of weekends in Monza. It started off well with a strong ninth place in qualifying, but the Finn was unable to finish either race in the points. Taponen came home 14th in the Sprint Race, then he had a good start in the Feature Race, moving up to fifth place, but he lost time in various battles eventually finishing 15th. He is ninth in the championship standings on 67 points.
