Maranello, 17 September – The Risi Competizione 458 Italia GT2 is on the fourth row of the grid for the six hour race that gets underway today at California’s Laguna Seca circuit at 13.30. Toni Vilander set the seventh fastest time on the Houston team’s debut with the 458 on the helter skelter that is the Mazda Raceway. The Finn’s lap of 1.23.518 is just a few tenths off the pole man Mueller who did a 1.22.226 in a BMW.
Vilander’s performance, is all the more noteworthy given that in the morning qualifying session, the Finn’s team-mate, Jaime Melo had an accident while evaluating set up changes on the car.
The car was not handling properly because of a problem with the settings on the dampers and the Brazilian lost control of the rear and slammed into the barriers. Fortunately, only the bodywork was damaged, but by the time the car was repaired, the session was all but over. Vilander was thus only able to do nine laps. “It was difficult tackling this track doing so few laps,” he said about his debut on this demanding circuit. “However, our car has good potential and I’m sure we could have improved our time but for the problems we encountered. But as usual, nothing is decided yet and in a six hour race, anything can happen.” Looking at the grid, there was an excellent showing for the 458 Italia GT2 driven by Brown-Cosmo (Extreme Speed Motorsport) fourth fastest ahead of its sister car in the hands of Sharp-Van Overbeek, sixth fastest.”
