A meeting with Ferrari’s past in Maranello

Finally, a bit of time off! After the Valencia weekend, I went straight to Maranello where I spent two packed days both on the technical and the promotional front. This morning I went back home to relax for a few days before setting off again for the next Grand Prix, in England this time, at Silverstone.

With the team, we went back over the last race and the short and long term development plans. I take away good memories from Valencia. It was a positive weekend, especially the race. In fact it meant I filled a gap in my trophy collection, but the best part of it was seeing again the delight of the crowd when I passed Mark, first on track and then at the pit stop: racing in Spain is always something special!

It is a key time in the season. We are moving forward, as could be seen in the last three races, but now we must also confirm the progress seen at Monaco, Montreal and Valencia on a track with completely different characteristics, which is definitely more suited to our main rivals. At Silverstone, you need a lot of aerodynamic downforce and this is area where we are lagging behind. We will have some new parts, but there’s a step from that to saying we will have made up the difference…Maybe! We must be realistic and accept that it’s not possible that in less than two months – the time past since the Barcelona race – we have closed the gap that was seen at the Catalunya circuit. It wasn’t a whole lap, because that was down to the way the race panned out, but it was definitely bigger than what we have seen in the last three races. We must continue to work on improving the car and then I am sure the win will come. When? I don’t have a crystal ball to be able to give a definite answer.

In Maranello, I had the opportunity to meet a driver who has been part of the history of Formula 1 and of Ferrari, John Surtees. We took part in a promotional event organised by our technical partner Shell and he was very interesting to talk to, comparing our experiences as drivers and, above all, talking about our lives with a special team like Ferrari. It’s nice to meet people who can give you a first hand account of what Formula 1 was like back then!

Today, the team told me about Pirelli’s tyre choices for the coming three races. At the British Grand Prix, we will be running the Soft and the Hard, the same choice that featured in the early stages of the championship. Okay, for us that means one more challenge, namely being able to make all types of tyre work as well as possible. Anyway, the tyre choice is the same for everyone and there’s no point discussing if the pair of compounds chosen is more suited to one team or another. It’s up to the teams to adjust the cars to get the best out of the tyres both in terms of performance and life.

Dear Fernando! I really hope you can find some time to read our comments. I just wanna say I haven't seen a driver in Formula-1 (with exception of Michael) who has worked so hard as you. You are not only the fastest guy other there, but your skills outside the track are phenomenal, as well. You motivation, your power, your determination for the team are so high qualities which I always admired at you! I don't care which position you drive in, it's always a pleasure to see the best driver ever! Good luck, Nando!

Fernando. you are the greatest driver out there and you outperform the car you have been given on almost all occassions. I live in england but to me you are far better than Lewis. Keep up the great work and im sure you'll get the harder compound tyres to work in silverstone.. good luck

Hola Ferito and welcome to rainy old England … as your Silverstone challenge looms I have to wonder whether it will be a wet or dry race this coming Sunday because if it does rain we know that it will certainly influence the race(??) … I’m also wondering who chose to run only the hard and soft Pirelli tyres for this particular (‘British’) Grand Prix … mmm just when you were hoping to see a significant Ferrari breakthrough … but I must push all of my qualms to one side and have faith that you will succeed here in England my little pumpkin and gain some substantial points … of course it’s around this time in the racing season that karma and luck really start to come into force so anything could occur before and during the race … nail-biting and exciting times Ferito for sure!! I will quietly ask ‘Nike’ (the winged Goddess of strength, speed and victory) to assist you in your quest on Sunday … in Greek mythology she was a close companion of Zeus and a divine charioteer who would fly around the battlefields rewarding the victors with glory and fame … then there was Muhammad Ali who once said that “Champions are made from something they have deep inside them … a desire … a dream … a vision!” … and Evan Esar claimed that “Success is the good fortune that comes from aspiration … desperation … perspiration … and inspiration!” (ha! ha!) … you are never far from my thoughts dear heart and it is you who truly inspires and motivates me to achieve greater ‘things’ … recuerdo que mi hombre querido que su destino está escrito en las estrellas!! … 4 … 3 … 2 … 1 … sending lots love and a huge lingering bear hug until next time xxxxxxx

Alonso, Nicelydone my friend, Nicelydone!!! Awesome Job at Silverstone!! It was great to see you do the happy dance on top of the Ferrari in parc ferme!!! It was long overdue! Can't wait for you to come back to America!!! Austin 2012 ;-) It was so much fun seeing you in Indy during the interviews, signings and pit walk!!! Good luck the rest of the season!!! Realistically you said it was not possible to close the gap. Yet, you were the fastest driver in the dry part of the race...Anyway Silverstone shows that without the blown diffusers the Ferrari is a very strong car able to fight for the win on it's weak circuits. This is good for next season because the blown diffusers will be banned.

Hola Ferito ... ohhh it was a long time coming but THAT was an emphatic victory my darling man and you deserved every ounce of the ‘Mumm Cordon Rouge’ that was sprayed over you (by Mark and Sebastian) and that extra long swig you imbibed (I hope you enjoyed a little more champagne during your evening celebrations?) ... what can I say Ferito except to echo your (and your race engineer’s) sentiments that it was truly ‘a fantastic day’ and a great achievement (Felipe did a stalwart job too!) ... I’m so happy for you mi campeon ... mi heroe ... you certainly conquered the English rose and won her heart (you were almost 17 seconds ahead of the Red Bulls at the finish line (yey!)). A turning point indeed and just brilliant to watch ... let’s hope there will be more of the same (or similar) for the rest of the season ... I’m already counting the days until the Nurburgring sweetie but at this moment it’s a quote from Mr William Shakespeare that I want to convey to you and his wise words were: “To climb steep mountains requires a slow pace at first” ... or perhaps a little more apt would be Thomas Jefferson’s gem of wisdom: “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal ... and nothing on this earth can help the man with the wrong attitude!” A bit rushed today mi carino but hope to write again tomorrow … just wanted to congratulate you on a splendid race and for climbing up to 3rd on the points board … soon … xxxxxxx
