Exciting days ahead

May 9, 2012 · Posted by Fernando Alonso

Here we are, on the eve of my home race, the Spanish Grand Prix. It’s always a special event for me, because racing in front of my fans has always been a unique feeling. This topic and my relationship with the fans is something you can find out more about exclusively in the sixth edition of the Scuderia Ferrari Racing News at and, as many of you have been able to read, in the answers I have posted to my followers on @alo_oficial.

On the subject of excitement, yesterday was a special day at Maranello. It was the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Gilles Villeneuve and Ferrari chose to commemorate it by inviting his son Jacques to drive the 312 T4, the car that his father drove during the 1979 season. Gilles is a legendary figure for everyone, in Maranello and around the world and I think it must have been incredible for Jacques to drive this fantastic car. What I know of the father came only through films and obviously, the one I remember best is the duel he had with Arnoux at Dijon, when he was driving the very same car that was on track yesterday. Unfortunately, these days, we no longer see this sort of fight because there are more difficulties to deal with: the cars are now dominated by aerodynamics and those sorts of passing moves are no longer possible. On top of that, there was definitely more respect then than there is now between us drivers, partly because they knew that, in those cars, they were risking their lives. I don’t want to say that today things are done incorrectly, but I believe there is not that mutual respect, at least not from everyone, that there was back then. It’s a problem that goes back a long way, to the junior categories and I think the time has come to try and get it back. I think Jacques was happy to be here in Maranello yesterday: for the first time, he was able to put on a red race suit with the Ferrari badge and his name sewn on above it. We are friends and it was nice to see him again. We were team-mates, even if just for very few races in 2004 and I get on well with him. He is very professional and very sincere. Yesterday was also the opportunity to plug a gap in my collection of helmets from my team-mates, as Jacques gave me one which dated back to the season he drove for Sauber.

It was nice to see so many mechanics from that time, clearly happy to be back on track watching a Villeneuve. It was yet another episode that made me understand how special is Ferrari’s history, the history of a team with an incredible tradition, but that always looks to the future.

The immediate future means the Spanish Grand Prix. In Montmelo, we will be counting on making a step forward, but we won’t know until Saturday if we have and if so, how big a step it is. We have updates on the F2012, some of which we tested in Mugello last week and others which we will try out on Friday in free practice. Clearly, having limited the damage in the first four races this year, we must turn things around. Having said that, it’s not the case that if we are not on pole in Barcelona then it’s the end of the world… The important thing is to make progress, reducing the gap as much as possible, first this weekend, then again in Monaco and after that, in Montreal, Valencia, Silverstone…The season is very long, with sixteen races to go, the same number that constituted the entire calendar back in 2003. We must continue to work day and night, just as did Gilles’ mechanics, whom I met at the track yesterday and just as our guys do today. I will be flying with them to Barcelona this afternoon. With the same spirit of wanting to win and being prepared to fight with all one’s strength to achieve that, which is the spirit that has driven me ever since I was a kid racing karts.

Hi sweetie Yes, this will be a very exciting weekend for you, with all of the Spanish people there to support you. You have the support of people all over the world, but I guess your home and your people are most important to you. I hope you feel the support and love we all have for you. It must be a wonderful feeling. My weekend will be very busy, our Toronto Rock Lacross team is in the final again on Saturday, we are defending our championship, one game to decide it. It will be nailbiting for sure, but as I am very close to a member of the team, I will be there for him either way. I hope this weekend goes wonderful for you as well, in everything on and off the track. I will be there, even if you won't see me. My heart and soul are with you, same thing, either way. I love reading your tweets, it just proves what I have always felt, you are a very special person, someone I would love to know. Maybe one day, I will meet you, and I will look into those eyes of yours, and know that you are looking at mine at the same time, OOHH, I think I could die in that moment, because life just couldn't get any better than that. Remember always, Love you lots Kim (Canada)

Wishing you a very sucessful weekend. I hope the updates are a big step forward and we can hope for lots more podiums and race wins - you all work so hard and really deserve it. I am really enjoying following you on twitter etc (which I access through your website)and really appreciate that you make time for us in this way - you have made me laugh quite a few times! I agree with you on the issue of needing to get the respect between drivers back and needing to start young. My son races in karting and we have always taught him to have this respect - when the whole grid has it too, the quality of the racing is much better and more enjoyable to watch (and less expensive! lol).:) X

Alo! There's nothing more that I would like to see in a "modern" F1 race than some exciting lead changes.... I think these days [engines and aerodynamics aside] races are won at the start or in the pits. Hopefully I live to see the day when all F1 drivers have the same car and a race become more about the drivers skills rather than the car (although I bet this would frustrate the constructors). Good luck in Catalunia! I'll be watching!

Fernando! This track should suit our car the most. The F2012 is strong through the fast corners and handle the tyres well at tracks where lateral forces are dominant. I lav all your pictures, you have been my idol for long years and I always considered you as a hero. Now, I know you are a simple human on weekdays. Ferrari has given me so much motivation and inspiration for my life, I keep on praying for a real turn around to the season!

Dear Mr.Alonso,Nando, I am a fan of yours sinds you came in F1.I have two children almost your age and they have fun seeing their mam as a F1 fan.For me you are the best at this moment.I hope for you that the car will be better now and that this WE will be the switch for chances to the championship. I beleave also in the power of numbers.Number 5(your ranking number)is not a good number for you.Put also your personal numbers on your bolide (2-7-9)2+7 = 9/ 9+9 = 18/ 1+9 = 9 . Nine is the number of perfection. Try to stay concentrated this WE( not so simple in Spain!) Be one with the car and become "numéro uno" God bless you. succes ! a racemum.

Hola Ferito ... a VERY special Monaco helmet indeed with the ‘Asturias Angels’ to help you fly with winged speed to the winning line ... the race is a gamble ... the dice have been thrown ... but to date you’ve excelled and your points have grown ... the roulette wheel is spinning and MY bet is on red ... RED NUMBER ONE cos you’ll get the job done ... here in ‘06&7 you were dealt two aces but now you must go for the ‘prial’ ... with your sleight-of-hand and slick moves it won’t prove a trial ... think 86 points ... think white ... think gold … then go out there and be ever so bold ... I will blow you some kisses FOR LUCK throughout mi campeon ... volar con los ángeles mi amor al hombre y have no fear for you ‘WILL defeat the enemy’!! xxxxxxx

Bonjour again Ferito … ohh more surprising Q3 results with you sitting 6th on the grid behind four seasoned drivers (most of who will undoubtedly make it VERY difficult for you to get past them on the track?) and the French rookie Grosjean … but remember mi querido that ANYTHING can happen during the race and it’s NOT going to be an impossible feat for you to win it (or at least nab a podium?) …remember too that: ‘it’s not the cards you’re dealt BUT how you play the game’ … buena suerte sweetie X

Hola Ferito ... ohh sweetie you were doing so well in the early stages of the race BUT you can’t win ‘em all mi carino and even though it was a brave (but somewhat risky?) gamble by your team to opt for a one-stop strategy ... sadly towards the end it crippled your filly and she could only limp home to the winning post in 5th ... nevertheless 10-points is NOT to be sneezed at and you’re only trailing by 2-points on the leader board ... with 13 more races ahead and if F1 continues with its current climate of ‘unpredictability’ WHO KNOWS what’s going to happen between now and November 25th?!? SO stay positive and keep your pecker up mi campeon for your home crowd will soon be cheering you on at the Circuito Urbano Valencia xxxxxxx

Hola Ferito ... from the air she looks like a legless Picasso ‘duck’ but tomorrow WILL your Valencian circuito bring you luck ... YES if you can make a cracking start from 11th down her back you’ll gain some places on the track ... then a charge towards the curve of her beak and some DRS along her belly to fairly streak ... don’t ruffle her feathers as you sail across her tail or she’ll quack at you and slow like a snail ... 57 HOT LAPS mi campeon (that’s temperature AND speed) cos 25-points on the board is what you need ... just pipped to the post last year so this time you must notch it up a gear ... if anyone can conserve their tyres while negotiating all those corners and curves YOU can mi carino so with the right strategy you’re in with a good chance … buena suerte sweetie and whatever happens enjoy the race! xxxxxxx PS: Ooh what a lot of ‘sport’ I have to watch this weekend ... let’s hope your team win their match against France tonight and that you (and I) will be celebrating a DOUBLE Spanish celebration tomorrow AFTER you win the race (or at least a podium?) … saw Jorge brilliantly make HIS way to the top podium last time out too ... viva Espana!!

Hola Ferito ... well your Valencian circuito certainly DID bring you some well-deserved luck this year mi carino BUT that’s doesn’t detract from the fact that YOU drove a ‘fantastica’ race ... it was like ‘watching a master perfecting his craft’ ... tenaciously scything your way through the field ... brave, feisty and (move over & get out of my way) FAST ... those weren’t hot laps mi carino they were WHITE HOT ... all the other drivers seemed to be on fire too but compared to you they could only resemble orange-hued ‘embers’ ... just riveting and awe-inspiring to behold and yet another wonderful achievement (it obviously meant a LOT to you being on the top podium at your home venue) ... that’s TWO wins under your belt now sweetie and 20-points ahead of the rest so enjoy your break and re-charge your batteries because Silverstone is the next ‘box to be ticked’ ... sending you a huge congratulatory hug & kiss to say ‘well done’ mi campeon X
