We’ll see who’s been the cleverest in the development championship

May 18, 2011 · Posted by Fernando Alonso

Here we are with the Spanish Grand Prix just round the corner, a race that has a special feel about it for me. I will arrive in Barcelona tonight, because right from tomorrow morning I’ve got an appointment in my diary: attending the launch of the first ever Ferrari Store to be opened in Spain, in the heart of the Catalan capital, on one of the most important streets in the city, Paseo de Gracia. Felipe will be there, as will Marc who will be very much the main man given he is from Barcelona. Then it will be time to head off to the track for the usual Thursday jobs, most of them dealing with media work.

It’s always nice to race in Spain. I love the feeling of warmth one gets from the fans right from the very first free practice sessions. Day after day, you can see the grandstands fill with flags – the red of Ferrari and the azure blue of my compatriots from Asturias – and that is a special feeling for me. My win here in 2006 is still one of the best moments of my career and it would be a dream come true to do it again with Ferrari sooner or later.

I know that you all want to know if that might happen already this weekend, but I am not able to give you an answer to that. On paper, we do not yet have the potential to be in a straight fight for the win, with one team clearly the favourite in this regard. However, we know things can change quickly in our sport and, in Turkey, finally we managed to bring home a podium finish. The road is still long, but I believe we have at least started down it going in the right direction.

These past few days, the team has worked so hard in Maranello on developing the 150° Italia and in order to be as well prepared as possible for these two back to back races, given that next week will be back on track in Monaco. During the days I spent in the factory I could feel that everyone there really wants to fight back: the feeling is so strong you can almost touch it, whether you are speaking with people in meetings or as you walk around the Gestione Sportiva. Both Felipe and I have done so many kilometres in the simulator and we feel that the updates being introduced will see us make progress in terms of performance. Whether or not this will be enough to close the gap to the best, we will only find out over the weekend, because we cannot ignore the fact that the others have not been twiddling their thumbs. We will see who has been the cleverest in the development championship.

The Catalunya Circuit is one of the ones we know best because traditionally it is a favourite venue for winter testing. This year, we have already had two sessions there, one at the end of February and the other in early March.

This means we will all arrive there with a pretty good idea of what settings we will use as a baseline on the car to start the weekend, even if the conditions we will encounter will be very different, especially in terms of temperature.

It will be very important to run continuously in Friday’s two free practice sessions to fine tune the car and check out the behaviour of the new technical components. It will also be vital to study the performance and wear of the tyres. In the race simulations we did during testing we saw significant degradation, especially on the front left tyre, which is put under major stress: we will see if, with different temperatures, that situation changes. Compared to previous races at this track I think we will see more overtaking, especially down to the difference in tyre performance that could be a factor during the race: further reason to come to the track to watch the Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon. It would be nice to jump on the podium again and be able to salute all our fans from there: as far as me and the team are concerned, as usual, we will be giving it our very best shot.

Buenos dias, Fernando. Honestly, I am still confident of your success in this battle for third title. Hopefully, you will get another victory here. And yet, let me give a piece of advice: you have to fulfill only one task at every race - make good starts. That is the very one issue you have to deal with. In the race terms you're always great (your battle for second place with Mark was increadible! I love it!) Good luck!!! and greeting from my mother:-) (Ukrainian fan)

Hola Ferito … I’ve had a very hectic day today sweetie but was determined to get here and send you (at least) a brief good luck message before your first home race on Sunday … I hope the new parts for your ‘150 Italia’ help you to emulate your win of 2006 and of course the cheers from your fans and fellow compatriots in the grandstands which will no doubt help spur you on … Benjamin Franklin once said that ‘Energy and Persistence Conquer all Things’ … vaya para él mi hombre favorito y pasar a todos para ganar el primer lugar … soon … xxxxxxx

Dear Fernando I want to say what a fantastic start to the race today, that was amazing, WOW!!! you truly showed your driving skill with that start. I know how hard you worked today, what with Webber on you like that. O.K., the race did not end the way we would have liked, but hey, 5th is not bad!!! You know what they say about courage, it is silent and says, everything is fine, we will try again tomorrow. It is races like these, where you do so well, give your all, that I wish I had words of comfort to give you. Like you always say, that is racing. You did a great job today, so keep smiling my love, love you so so much, until next weekend, Kim (Canada)

Dear Fernando, I was in the L grandstand between the first corners and in front of the seat corner and I have to tell you about the crazy atmosphere. I was surrounded by a lot of Ferrari fans, Italians, British, Dutch, French(me) and of course Spanish !! Your Q3 qualification lap was incredible, man you entered the seat corner in a crazy way !! I thought that you were going to spin !! It was really spectacular !! Even the Mclaren fans (few places far) were looking to each other impressed !! That's pure racing, that's what we want to see !! And man, the start, what a crazy emotion !! I almost falled from my row !! It was like a goal in a football match !! The best moment I have ever had in a circuit, I remember how I was impressed watching on TV the crowd reaction when Felipe had the pole in Interlagos 2008 and when he crossed the line world champion for seconds. I always wanted to feel a moment like this !! And now that I tasted it, it's like a drug, I want to have it again and again!! This weekend give me only one need: to go and discover Monza, I think that It's going to be crazy with all the tifosis !! So i'm gonna book my trip to Italy as soon as possible. Formula1 is great but if you can feel the emotions of it, it is totaly a new dimension !! I hope that the car will improve soon and I'm very confident that for the next races the very soft tyres will bring you back to RB and Mclaren level and that we won't see again this hard tyres that Pirelli brought in Montmelo. All my support to you, to Felipe, the team and to Stefano who is having a hard time with a very emotional press. Forza Ferrari !! And one last thing, in the plane bringing me back to France everybody was conversing about the bill you will pay to the Spanish state to come back to your Asturies. And man, you had my respect in the track at Imola 2005 and now you had my respect in life. Cheers

hey fernando, i will have so inpresioned with your start in the spanish grand prix, has been amasing and you had showed that your driven is an exeptional example of character of determination and mentality of victory, but the reality is the unique true, and this think is about our performance of capability of power for the success. our pass of race is realy realy bad, for me. we can`t keep going througth the race the rhythm of the team ahead. we must work so hard to better our performance in the qualyfing and our rhythm into the race. but specially in the aerodinamics area. i hope we can to develop much better our pass during the corner, because we can't lost more points, and even thougth i know that you are sure that we can fight for championship, really i don't think so, but ovbiusly, you know more than me that all can happened , but even thougth in my opinion i saw very very difficult. actually to pretend to agree to the victory is a great dream but nothingness realistic, i'm sorry for my pessimism, but i'm sure that in your mind existency the same thinks. i hope you had reason, because this to signify that to find out reason for to have illusion for the success. is all of my part and i wish you the best for the rest of the season. ciao e arrivederci, forza ferrari e forza fernando

I have just arrived in Barcelona and I can’t wait for the race weekend to start after what was quite a long break since the last Grand Prix. The most important part of this break of three weeks between Bahrain and the Spanish Grand Prix was obviously the test in Mugello. It was good to make use of this extra time, although I am not sure quite how useful it was. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always useful to test, but in order to run at Mugello, we “lost” one test before the start of ... Read all »
