Plenty of good memories from Suzuka

October 6, 2010 · Posted by Fernando Alonso

I arrived at Suzuka yesterday in the late afternoon and I received a surprise straightaway. The traditional Italian restaurant “Campanella”, that is popular with many Formula 1 people, doesn’t exist any more. That’s a pity because I’ve been going there since the first time I came to Suzuka at the end of the Nineties when I raced here in karts. I was in the same hotel that I am now and so many good memories of this circuit are linked directly to that first experience. Sure, there was also the success in 2006 which was crucial for my second world championship. I well know that race probably calls something unpleasant to mind for many people both inside and outside Ferrari but that’s racing: to win on this track gives a special emotion because it’s one of the hardest tracks in the world. To succeed here you need to have a car that is very strong from the aerodynamic point of view: in some ways it’s similar to Silverstone and to Barcelona. There’s a very special first section characterised by a very long first bend and a series of Esses that can have a major influence on the lap time if you don’t get them absolutely right. It’s a track that’s very demanding both on the technical side and when it comes to driving.

As I’ve already said in recent days, the F10 has proved it is competitive at very different tracks such as Monza and Singapore so there is no obvious reason why it shouldn’t be the same in Suzuka. But to start understanding where we really are, we will have to wait until Friday afternoon after we’ve gone through the first two sessions of free practice. I like Japan, it’s one of my favourite countries. I like it for the food and for the culture, both so different from our European traditions. And then there’s Tokyo, a very beautiful city that is always very interesting. To race at Suzuka is special also for the enthusiasm of the Japanese fans who are truly passionate. We hope to offer them a good show this weekend.

I remember when you had 13-years old and, before the annual Spanish Federation pricegivings, you were asked by the Federation personnel why you was not interested in knowing the proceedings for the ceremony you would be taken part in a couple of hours. You simply answered that you came there every year and you knew it already LOL! You was the best then and are the best now. Best wishes. Fernando from Madrid

Hola Ferito … and so … the Suzuka circuit beckons provocatively … she throws down her gauntlet to you once again and asks “how much do you want it Fernando … have you got what it takes??” … she will test and tease you and demand your respect … she will seduce you with her voluptuous curves and make you lust after that longed-for trophy … she’ll dare you to defeat all your rivals and dazzle the crowd … She will invite you to brush against her red (and white) lips whilst all the time whispering “you can do it Fernando … you can do it!” … she’ll tempt you to glide gently over her surface … round and round like a circle in a spiral … again and again over the bumps … past the pitlane … across the finish line … flags … banners … cheers … waves … whispers … (ohh I should have been a poet Ferito ha! ha!). Four laps to go and the suspense is excruciating … three and it’s breathless tension … two more and the anticipation is exquisite (in both senses of the word) … the closing lap and yes yes safely past the final finish line … ahhhhh to achieve the ultimate ‘hat-trick’ here at your old familiar favourite Suzuka track would be a real coup (a fantastic feat/masterstroke/ achievement) … so you go out there and show them what you’re made of Ferito and give us another stunning demonstration of your skill, competence and finesse … chalk-up another well-deserved and hard-fought-for victory!!! Thanks to you (and possibly a little help from me and a few others) a new era in Formula One is dawning (yey!) … I will blow you a kiss for good luck when the last red light goes on and I will be there with you in spirit when you celebrate after the race but meanwhile stay sanguine and confident … relax … smile … breathe deeply and look forward to your intimate rendezvous with ‘Suzuka’ … your date with destiny … mi campeon … mi heroe!! !Que lo pases bien! … de Linda

Well done honey, this must have been very difficult for you, with qualifiing and racing in the same day. You did a fantastic job today, it was so nice to see you smile once again, and I just love the wave and the thumbs up! Please have a good rest now, take good care of you, and I hope the next race is yours. I want to say how sorry I am for the loss of the Italian soliders, I know Cananda loses them on a regualar basis, and it is just such an awful war. I will keep their families in my prayers, and hope that this war ends soon. It is so tragic what is happening over there. Anyway, enjoy your victory, you may have been third today, but you are still number one in my heart. Stay safe Fernando, love you lots Kim (Canada)

OHHH Ferito … you printed my ditty about Suzuka (I’m so excited ha! ha!) … not much time today and so much I want to say to you (still haven’t acquired my memory stick yet?) … firstly my congratulations on your ‘podium finish’ … you drove another great race considering that the Red Bull cars are (allegedly?) half to one second faster than your F10? You didn’t pass the finish line 6, 10, 12, or 14 seconds behind the two leaders you were right there with Vettel and Webber with only (at most) a couple of seconds between you all as you passed the post and you virtually stayed with them for the entirety of the race ... so bravo and well done again …

I have just arrived in Barcelona and I can’t wait for the race weekend to start after what was quite a long break since the last Grand Prix. The most important part of this break of three weeks between Bahrain and the Spanish Grand Prix was obviously the test in Mugello. It was good to make use of this extra time, although I am not sure quite how useful it was. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always useful to test, but in order to run at Mugello, we “lost” one test before the start of ... Read all »
