Hockenheim has been considered one of the fastest tracks in Formula 1 for many years. Since 1951 the track has been used, together with the Nürburgring – for the German GP. On the track, around 100 km from Frankfurt and close to Heidelberg, the cars reached top speeds of up to 340 km/h. As of 1964, due to the construction of a motorway, which crossed the old track, the new section called Motodrom was built. This section included a series of slow corners. After Jim Clark’s fatal accident in a Formula 2 race in the year 1968 and ahead of the German GP 1970, two chicanes were included to interrupt the long straights. After Patrick Depailler’s fatal accident in 1980, another chicane was integrated in 1982 at the entrance of the fast Ostkurve corner, while its profile was modified again in 1992, also due to safety reasons. In 1994 two more chicanes (named after Clark and Senna) were modified to slow down the cars on the longs straights. In 2002 the fact that the circuit was still extremely dangerous and the wish to gain some space for new grandstands lead to more modifications of the straights and some new slow corners, creating overtaking possibilities for the single-seaters. Today Hockenheim can be divided into two parts: the extremely fast section through the forest and the famous Motodrom (Stadium), a mixed section, very slow and windy, with several grandstands, which make the track almost look like a stadium, leading to the main straight and the boxes.
